I’ll be the first one to admit that I didn’t want to baby proof my home because when I think about “baby proofing” I think about shoddy cupboard clips that are not only unsightly, but they never work properly. Obviously, the wall sockets have covers on them, free standing wardrobes have been bolted to the wall, and dangerous items have been moved out of reach, but I was determined not to make my gorgeous TV stand and kitchen cupboards look like a 1995 infomercial full of bad safety hacks.
Our TV stand has a long glass door that opens with pneumatic cylinders. This door keeps all the electronics and cables away from our curious little boy, but the temptation to pull on the door and watch it slowly slide open and closed (again and again and again and again and again and again…) was driving us insane. Seth was far more interested in opening the door than actually playing with the contents of the TV unit but the constant opening and closing was causing the door to stay ajar, making us worried that the cylinders would give in.
We were definitely a bit miffed that we would now have to put some ugly clip on it. When we started looking at baby proofing options – ones that would be “invisible” / completely hidden, none looked promising until we found Aycorn’s Magnetic Safety Locks.
These locks don’t need any drilling or screws to secure them – you simply stick them in place. (Although, there are little slots on the sides and screws provided, should you want to secure them this way.) They come with 3M tape already attached, so there’s no faffing with cutting double-sided tape to the right size and so on. There’s also extra precut 3M squares should you need to peel off a lock in the future and move it somewhere else. 3M tape is extremely durable. The lock won’t budge without some serious effort so you can rest assured that it will never come off unless you take it off yourself. This is handy if you are renting and don’t want to permanently fix locks to the cupboard doors.
The Magnetic Safety Locks are so easy to fit that it literally took us 30 seconds. We laughed about it because we searched for so long and were so worried about ruining the aesthetic of our furniture, but here’s a product that works SO well, can’t be seen from the outside, and it took less than a minute to sort out our problems. It’s quite genius, actually.
What makes the Magnetic Safety Locks so easy to install, is the unique installation adapter. After removing the paper from the 3M tape, you pop the lock into the adapter and stick the adapter to the edge of the cupboard (where it meets the door). Closing the cupboard door will glue the lock in place. When you open the door again, the lock comes off the adapter and remains on the door. This process only takes a few seconds. Then you just need to attach the second part of the lock where the adapter used to be and you are all done. If this isn’t making any sense, please watch the installation video on Aycorn’s website to see how simple it is.
The way these clips work is also very simple. In their normal position, the hook catches the latch, locking it in place. When you apply the magnet, it pulls the hook backwards, unlocking it. It works seamlessly every time. We’ve never had any issues with the hook getting stuck or the magnet not being strong enough. (The locks work on doors up to 38mm thick – standard house door thickness.)
Now, because you can’t see the locks from the outside, you may forget exactly where you placed them – but that’s why Aycorn include tiny transparent stickers. I swear, they have thought of EVERYTHING! These stickers are handy if you have other people who need access to the locked cupboards, but aren’t really familiar with your home, such as a nanny.
We thought that we may lose the keys but since they (and their bases) are magnetic, we’ve kept them high up on the fridge. It’s the perfect place for us because it’s always within reach when we’re in the kitchen and Seth isn’t tall enough to grab it. The keys also come with a base that has 3M tape on it, so that they can be glued to a wall or any other safe place. You don’t have to worry about the keys falling out of their base because they screw in.
Keys are available to buy separately if you need more than the two supplied, or if you need to replace them.
Besides keeping our TV stand and kitchen cupboards locked, we’ve also placed one lock on the “important drawer” that we keep all our passports and Visa information in. We don’t have a safe (haven’t really needed one) but I do like the extra piece of mind that we have now. I’m thinking about placing a lock on the medicine cabinet in the bathroom, just in case guests decide to have a peek. You never know!
I have two suggestions if you use the locks to keep valuables or important things hidden away:
1. Don’t mark this particular cupboard / drawer with a sticker so that other’s don’t know it is locked. Curiosity might get the better of them.
2. Only tell the people who need to know about the magnetic keys, where to find them and what they look like. For example, the nanny will need access to the medicine cabinet but no one else, so don’t keep a key right next to the cabinet and then announce it to the whole world.
We’re not too worried about people seeing the keys on the fridge at the moment but if it becomes an issue we’ll move them.

We were so impressed with the Magnetic Safety Locks that we decided to buy Aycorn’s Corner Protectors too. They did not disappoint!
The Corner Protectors are made from special impact resistant PVC and are much larger than others I’ve seen. This made me feel at ease, knowing that they would offer a bit more protection should Seth ever have to make some forceful contact with it.
The Corner Protectors come with adhesive tape that’s already applied. Simply peel the paper off and stick them on to your furniture. This tape was specially sourced for its strength and durability, and is superior to other tapes used on similar products currently on the market.
There’s also extra tape included should you need to move a protector in future.
The protectors are completely transparent and the rounded edges help to make them even less noticeable.
I also appreciated the resealable bag they came in. It’s the little things, you know.
A pack of 20 costs £7.97 and is available on Amazon Prime.
