Popcorn the Unicorn

I have a really special book review for you today. It’s not only special because it’s about a unicorn but because this book was written, illustrated AND self-published by a magical woman herself, Danielle Smurthwaite.

Danni is an author, illustrator and designer. Her work, such as prints, clothing and signed copies of her book, can be found at The Unicorn Room.

Here are some of my favourites from her shop:

Popcorn the Unicorn

Popcorn the Unicorn was written for her sons, but they loved it so much that she’s decided to share it with the world.

It’s a story of a mischievous unicorn and his affliction for popping bubbles. His bubble popping habits end up annoying the village, so he comes up with a plan to make things right with the angry pixies, dragons and dwarves. His plan is such a success that it earns him a new nickname, Popcorn.

Each of the 42 pages are so beautifully detailed that I find myself staring at them for ages before reading the next page. Each picture really could be a print on its own.

My son, who is a year old, seems to enjoy the rhyming pattern of the story. The only time he ever sits still is when we read books but when the words rhyme, he becomes far more engrossed in the story, so I’m chuffed that he likes this book as much as I do.

I think he like the dragons too. Whenever we turn to their pages he’ll squeal and smack them with his hands. He has a very dramatic way of showing his appreciation for something.

What really stood out for me with this book, is that you can feel the love that went into it. Everything is perfect and special. You get a glimpse of her magical personality through it all. Even the packaging it arrived in, was lovingly hand written and doodled on. Inside the package, the books were hugged with tissue paper and unicorn confetti.
It’s little extras like this that make me cherish the book even more.

The book that Danni sent me is a signed copy and I feel proud to own it.

Her book is available on Amazon Prime for £11 and signed copies can be bought directly from her online shop for £15.
With each signed copy purchased in November, you’ll get a free sheet of temporary Popcorn the Unicorn tattoos.

Danni sent me an extra signed copy to gift to one of you.
