Last year, I showed you how we store Seth’s toys in an Ottoman in the lounge and today I’ll be sharing what we’ve done to keep his toys tidy in his bedroom.
As I’ve mentioned before, the house we currently live in, is super small. Very practical, but tiny. Making the most out of each nook and cranny has been a challenge.
The toys in his room were kept in cute stack-able storage boxes but having to unstack and unpack, only to repack and restack them, multiple times a day, was doing my head in. I needed something simpler.
At first, I thought the 3-Tier Toy Shelf would work well, but after seeing the actual size of it in YouTube videos, I decided against it. It’s just too big for his room. Seth would probably try to pull the top boxes off that he can’t reach yet so I was worried that it may fall on him too. If we had more space and he was a bit older, then yeah.
After browsing on Songmic’s website, looking at all the things that they have, I saw this shoe bench. It was perfect! I wanted something that he could actually use himself, not just something that hides his toys. I had this idea that I would put all his board books and the current rotation of toys in the bench’s shelves – and then he’d be able to crawl / waddle over to it and choose the toys he wants to play with. They toys that aren’t in the current rotation will stay in the stack-able boxes until they are needed.
You guys – it worked exactly as I thought it would! (That doesn’t happen often for me hahaha.) Seth LOVES the bench. He makes a beeline for it in the mornings and the chaos begins. The deliberation process is so violent. He picks up a toy and flings it backwards until he’s found the one that he wants, and I just try and dodge them as best as I can. This leaves his room in a big mess, but I don’t mind. He must play and enjoy it. At the end of the day it takes me less than five minutes to put all his toys back in their place again.
It’s working really, really well for us at the moment. I also like that you can see the toys. They’re not untidy in the shelf and it makes his room look so colourful. (I’m not into a million shades of white and grey.)
It’s really important to me that the furniture items we have at the moment, are very practical and functional. The top of the bench has a padded cushion which is attached with Velcro. It has a zip too so that you can take it off if you ever need to wash it. I like to sit on the bench and read him bedtime stories while he slowly drifts off to sleep in his bed.
When Seth out grows the need for this bench, it will live in the entrance hall and be used as it was intended – for shoes. I may change the material of the cushion depending on what will work best with the décor downstairs.
The bench is very sturdy, so I have no doubt that it will last us a long time. I was skeptical when we were assembling it though. You have to start the assembly from the middle shelves, outward, so it was a bit of a wobbly juggling act to get all the pieces in place. Once the sides were on though, it was sturdy, and with the back panel hammered in, it’s proper solid. The backboard is also thicker than others we’ve received with different flat-pack furniture and this really helps the bench become sturdier. I don’t feel like it’s going to break if I sit on it – there’s no play at all.
The veneer is a plasticy one, which is a godsend. It doesn’t chip when Seth bashes his toys on it and I don’t have to worry about water spilling on it, or slimy hands… or food. It’s toddler proof. The oak colour also matches all the other furniture in his room well, so it doesn’t look out of place.
The bench is 104 x 30 x 48cm. The six inner shelves cannot be adjusted, but the outer two can (you can even take it out completely), so there’s space for boots if you need it.
There are currently two colours available: wood and white.
The bench is available via Amazon for £52.
