Toy storage for small homes: Shoe benches

Last year, I showed you how we store Seth’s toys in an Ottoman in the lounge and today I’ll be sharing what we’ve done to keep his toys tidy in his bedroom.

As I’ve mentioned before, the house we currently live in, is super small. Very practical, but tiny. Making the most out of each nook and cranny has been a challenge.

The toys in his room were kept in cute stack-able storage boxes but having to unstack and unpack, only to repack and restack them, multiple times a day, was doing my head in. I needed something simpler.

At first, I thought the 3-Tier Toy Shelf would work well, but after seeing the actual size of it in YouTube videos, I decided against it. It’s just too big for his room. Seth would probably try to pull the top boxes off that he can’t reach yet so I was worried that it may fall on him too. If we had more space and he was a bit older, then yeah.

After browsing on Songmic’s website, looking at all the things that they have, I saw this shoe bench. It was perfect! I wanted something that he could actually use himself, not just something that hides his toys. I had this idea that I would put all his board books and the current rotation of toys in the bench’s shelves – and then he’d be able to crawl / waddle over to it and choose the toys he wants to play with. They toys that aren’t in the current rotation will stay in the stack-able boxes until they are needed.

You guys – it worked exactly as I thought it would! (That doesn’t happen often for me hahaha.) Seth LOVES the bench. He makes a beeline for it in the mornings and the chaos begins. The deliberation process is so violent. He picks up a toy and flings it backwards until he’s found the one that he wants, and I just try and dodge them as best as I can. This leaves his room in a big mess, but I don’t mind. He must play and enjoy it. At the end of the day it takes me less than five minutes to put all his toys back in their place again.

It’s working really, really well for us at the moment. I also like that you can see the toys. They’re not untidy in the shelf and it makes his room look so colourful. (I’m not into a million shades of white and grey.)

It’s really important to me that the furniture items we have at the moment, are very practical and functional. The top of the bench has a padded cushion which is attached with Velcro. It has a zip too so that you can take it off if you ever need to wash it. I like to sit on the bench and read him bedtime stories while he slowly drifts off to sleep in his bed.

When Seth out grows the need for this bench, it will live in the entrance hall and be used as it was intended – for shoes. I may change the material of the cushion depending on what will work best with the décor downstairs.

The bench is very sturdy, so I have no doubt that it will last us a long time. I was skeptical when we were assembling it though. You have to start the assembly from the middle shelves, outward, so it was a bit of a wobbly juggling act to get all the pieces in place. Once the sides were on though, it was sturdy, and with the back panel hammered in, it’s proper solid. The backboard is also thicker than others we’ve received with different flat-pack furniture and this really helps the bench become sturdier. I don’t feel like it’s going to break if I sit on it – there’s no play at all.

The veneer is a plasticy one, which is a godsend. It doesn’t chip when Seth bashes his toys on it and I don’t have to worry about water spilling on it, or slimy hands… or food. It’s toddler proof. The oak colour also matches all the other furniture in his room well, so it doesn’t look out of place.

The bench is 104 x 30 x 48cm. The six inner shelves cannot be adjusted, but the outer two can (you can even take it out completely), so there’s space for boots if you need it.
There are currently two colours available: wood and white.

The bench is available via Amazon for £52.

  20. Angela Fitzjohn

I would like the cabinet in white, and I would use it to store my families shoes in, would be nice and tidy, and you have the seat on top.

  21. Rhia

    What a brilliant idea.
Admittedly, out shoes are a tip (we have a rack for them, but it’s too flimsy so they all end up in a heap anyway) so this would be really handy but it wouldn’t fit in our hallway…. So I would definitely be pinching your fab idea for our 3 year old’s toys and books. And the bench is an added bonus!

  22. Danielle Spencer

I would love the cabinet in wood and would use it for storing some of my candle collection

  23. Jo Carroll

I think I’d opt for the white. It would make an awesome reachable bookshelf for my little man and all those incredible children’s illustrated books he’s accumulated. x

  24. Debbie W

I’d probably go for white and I’d use it in the hall for all the bits and pieces the kids need for school. At the moment I’ve a bookshelf there which contains boxes of pens, pencils, rulers and other stationery items which my older ones who are at secondary school just delve into when they need something. If I used the bottom for school shoes, the top for equipment and the middle shelves for PE kits, lunchboxes etc that would mean all there things for school would be right there in one place and it can be used as a seat too, which is brilliant.

  25. Ashley Phillips

I would choose the wood finish and do exactly what you have done, my youngest daughters toys are currently in big tub buckets that get emptied completely as what she wants to play with always happens to be at the bottom. I sit with both my girls until they are asleep and currently end up with dead legs sitting on the floor so it’s fantastic its sturdy enough for an adult to sit on.

  26. Jessi

White, I’d use it in my girls room, possibly for toy storage, or for all their shoes

  27. Amelia Kennedy

I would go for the wood and store all my shoes in it (and there are many pairs!) x

  28. Lindsey Stuart

I would choose the wood colour very nice! I would use this shoe bench to store our shoes in the hall way 🙂 I think it is super that it has a bench to sit on, brilliant.

  29. FARIDAH BROOKER

I would like wood and I would use it for shoes.

  30. Susan Smith

Would love the wood colour and we would use it for our little ones books and dvds

I would love white to match my daughter’s wardrobe

  32. Liam Bishop

The white colour for my daughter’s bedroom for her things.

  33. Ellie Bromilow

  34. Mark Matthews

I think that we would use it as storage and also as a bench.

I would pick the wood colour. As for it’s use, I think we would use it the same way you have. We can always use more toy storage.

  42. Kathleen marsden

I’d have it in the Natural colour and I’d store my wool in it. Each compartment with different colours so that they are easy to find

  43. Lynsey Harvey

Oh i love both colours but if i had to pick i would go for white and grey and most of the rooms in our house are based around them colours!!

We only moved into the house last year (our first home) so my shoes are currently in a massive storage bag as ive nowhere to put them! I would use this in the hall or spare room for my shoes until the little one is old enough to walk and then i might reuse it for toys as it’s a brilliant idea. Love it!

  44. Inga Andersen

I’d love the oak one, I have many great nephews and nieces and have toys ready for them to play when they visit I’d really love the shelves for their toys and books so they can get the toys out themselves. A plus is that they always put things away so having them all in one place would be great 🙂

  60. Kellie Steed

I would choose the wood colour if I was lucky enough to win and I would actually use it for shoes! I have so many pairs of shoes in the hall way and have needed a shoe rack forever, but it always falls to the bottom of the priority list for purchases. Fingers crossed for this one.

  61. Simon C
